A personal struggle and hardship. One in which you are abandoned by many of those around you. You are left to yourself. You are exiled from your town and community. Not just for a week or month, not even a year or two. How does one cope with such hardship? How does one overcome such a challenge?

The story of Abraham and his father is mentioned a couple of times in the Quran. It is a story that highlights how opposition and enmity can sometimes come from the closest people to you, because they reject God. Abraham’s father and people were idol worshippers. God tells us in the 2st chapter how Abraham confronted his people and attempted to get them to think. God says in verse 51,

This story is about two men. Two men who were friends. Though they were friends, the circumstances of their lives were very different. The first was rich and prosperous. He owned gardens of fruit and had wealth. His wealth bought him workers and followers. But his wealth brought with it arrogance and disbelief. He had no care for others and no empathy towards them. He belittled them.

This is a story about courage in faith. Sometimes we take our faith for granted. When some people accept Islam, they face oppression and harm. They’re boycotted by their families and friends and financially and socially cut off. To remain strong in faith during such times and tests is extremely difficult, but also extremely rewarding as it shows a person’s faith in God.

The 12^th chapter of the Quran is dedicated to the story of the Messenger Joseph. Joseph came from a line of Messengers. His father was Jacob, his grandfather Ishmael and his great grandfather Abraham. Joseph was extremely handsome and his position with his father very close. This however, lead to his brothers becoming jealous until they conspired to get rid of him. One day, they leave him for dead down a deep well, despite him being a young boy. From there, he is found by travellers and sold into slavery.
